Château de Rolle

The Château de Rolle, built in 1264 by the Counts of Savoy, was burned down by the Confederates in 1530 and 1536. It stands directly on the lake shore and was formerly protected from the land by moats. The castle complex shows an irregular floor plan: a three-winged structure with a large trapezoidal courtyard open to the west. Most of the buildings date from the renovations and new constructions in the 15th and 16th centuries. At the end of the two wings extending to the west, there is a round tower each (the northern one is the only one from the 13th century), while the castle is flanked on the lakeside by two square towers. Today, part of the castle houses the municipal administration of Rolle.
