The Château de Rochefort is a historic castle complex located in the French Auvergne region, in the Allier department. It sits on an elevation of approximately 321 meters above sea level and is characterized by its strategic location, which was once of great importance for defense.
History+
The origins of the Rochefort fiefdom date back to the late 11th century. However, the fortress acquired its current form primarily in the 12th and 13th centuries. During this period, the Lords of Bourbon recognized the military relevance of the site for securing the southern border of their territory against Auvergne. In the 14th century, the castle was owned by Jean, an illegitimate son of Louis I of Bourbon. In 1623, Pierre Chartier de Rouvignac, a captain of the chevau-légers, acquired the lordship and the castle. He gave it to his daughter Jeanne as a dowry in 1632 when she married Jean du Ligondès. Since then, the Château de Rochefort has remained continuously in the possession of the du Ligondès family. Parts of the complex were recognized as a historical monument in 1961, with full registration occurring in 2015.
