Château de Ratilly

The origins of Château de Ratilly date back to the 11th century, when a first castle was built on this site. Ratilly was first mentioned in a document in 1160 with Knight Renaud de Ratilly. Around 1270, Mathieu de Ratilly had the existing complex demolished and a new moated castle built, whose basic features correspond to the current structure. During the Hundred Years' War, between 1357 and 1380, Guy de Vallery used the fortress as a base for Breton adventurers. In 1485, Jean de Candiou was Lord of Treigny. Later, at the beginning of the Wars of Religion in 1567, Huguenots occupied the castle and established it as their main seat in the Auxerrois. After the accession of Henry IV in 1589, peace returned. Mary de Puy restored the castle from 1587, and his daughter Jeanne married Louis de Menou in 1616, who made further alterations, including connecting the southern towers. In 1732, Louis Carré de Montgeron acquired the property to spread Jansenist ideas, but was imprisoned in 1735. Ownership changed hands several times until Charles-Louis Vivien maintained the castle in 1849 and had the moats drained. After the death of the last private owner in 1945, Ratilly passed to Canon Grossier, who sold it in 1951 to Jeanne and Norbert Pierlo. They transformed the castle into a cultural center with a pottery workshop, concerts, and exhibitions, which is now continued by their children.

The castle is located at an elevation of approximately 267 meters above sea level in Treigny, a town in the Yonne department in the Bourgogne region, France.

Today, the Château de Ratilly is an active cultural center. It houses a stoneware manufactory, hosts concerts in summer, and provides an exhibition platform for contemporary artists.
