Château de Pettingen

The origins of the complex date back to the 10th century, when it was known as Pittigero Mazini. The castle received its current name, Pettingen, in the 13th century. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the Lords of Pettingen played a significant role in Luxembourg society. An important connection was established in the early 14th century through the marriage of Arnold of Pettingen to Marguerite of Rousy, a great-granddaughter of Countess Ermesinde. A descendant, Jean de Créhange, fought alongside René, Duke of Lorraine, against Charles the Bold of Burgundy. In retaliation for this resistance, the castle was destroyed by Charles in 1494 and its possessions confiscated. A decree by the Grand Council of Mechelen in 1503 led to the return of some of the assets and the reconstruction of the castle in its current form, with the four distinctive corner towers added in 1571. In 1684, the castle suffered severe damage again by the troops of Louis XIV. The ruin, which had long been owned by the Créhange family, was sold to the Duke of Arenberg in 1837. After the collapse of the south wall in 1920, the Luxembourg state finally acquired the complex in 1947.
