Château de Montorge
Château de Montorge, an impressive castle ruin, is perched on a prominent rocky ridge west of the city of Sion in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. The remains bear witness to a once extensive and heavily fortified complex, offering a wide view over the Rhone Valley.
History+
The medieval castle, also known as «Mons ordeus» in historical documents, was strategically located on a mountain. Its fortifications included deep dry moats carved into the rock, serving as obstacles to approach. Access was from the west via a movable bridge and a massive gatehouse, which was probably designed as a tower. An irregular curtain wall enclosed the castle grounds, which were likely mostly built upon internally, although only a few remains of these buildings are visible today. In the southeastern area, there was a building complex that included a residential wing and a cistern.
