Château de Menetou-Couture

Menetou-Couture Castle belongs to the commune of Menetou-Couture in the French department of Cher and consists of a medieval keep from 1460 and a residential building from the late 15th century. The other annexes date back to the mid-18th century.

The keep was built by the brothers Jean and Philippe de Villaines, Seigneurs de Menetou-Couture, as part of a heavily fortified military base on the border between the provinces of Burgundy and Berry. The estate was owned by this family for several decades. In 1908, the then owner had to sell the associated lands. Of the original 667 ha, only 40 ha remained, which corresponds to the area of the current park. The current owners acquired the castle in 1990.

The building, surrounded by old trees, has a stair tower and is over 30 m high. Its architecture remained unaffected by the Renaissance period. Overall, the rectangular keep with its fireplaces and its roof truss shaped like an upturned boat is a beautiful example of a 15th-century residential tower.
