Château de Lormont

Archaeological finds confirm settlement in the area as early as Gallo-Roman times. The first documented mention of a stately home at this location dates back to 1330, when the Archbishop of Bordeaux was named as the owner. This early complex, which included its own chapel, was likely destroyed during the French Wars of Religion. From 1626, Cardinal and Archbishop François de Sourdis had a new building erected on the medieval foundations, which was completed by 1662 under his nephew Henry de Béthune. The castle served as a country estate for the archbishops until the French Revolution. After being plundered and partially destroyed during the Revolution, the property was sold by the state in 1792. In the 19th century, it came into the possession of Georg Schacher, who had the dilapidated parts demolished and the preserved pavilion extended in an eclectic style. After World War II, during which the castle was used and plundered by German and later French troops, the complex continued to deteriorate. It was not until 2007 that extensive restoration work began under the new owner Norbert Fradin, transforming the preserved pavilion into offices and the listed outbuildings into a restaurant. A monumental fountain, built in the 17th century and previously sold, was also repurchased and re-erected.

Château de Lormont is located in the town of Lormont in the Gironde department, in the Aquitaine region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 55 meters above sea level.

Today, Château de Lormont is privately owned. Visitors will find a restored pavilion that serves as office space, as well as listed outbuildings that house a restaurant. The historic monumental fountain is also once again visible in its original location.
