The remains of the Castle can be visited

Larochette Castle, also known as Fels Castle, stands majestically on a rocky spur in the municipality of Larochette in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This historic complex, whose origins are presumed to date back to the 11th century, is a prominent landmark of the region and bears witness to a eventful past.

History+

Archaeological findings date the castle, first documented in 1176, to the first half of the 12th century. Its strategic location on a spur secured by steep rock faces underscores its military importance during its construction. In addition to defensive aspects, economic and territorial-political reasons also played a role, as early medieval trade routes intersected in the Ernz Valley and the river was used economically. The castle's history is closely linked to three noble families: the Lords of Fels, the Homburgs, and the Criechingers. Under John II of Fels, the dynasty reached its peak in the 14th century when he united important offices in Luxembourg. After his childless death in 1359, succession disputes arose, and the castle was subsequently divided multiple times. A fire in 1565 largely destroyed the complex. Despite later efforts by the heirs, the castle could not be rebuilt and fell into ruin.
