Château de Lacoste

In the Périgord Noir, in the south-east of the Dordogne department, the Château de Lacoste is located about two kilometers south-south-east of the village of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and its castle, on a height on the left bank of the Céou, dominating its valley by more than a hundred meters.

Based on an 18th-century manor, the current Château de Lacoste was built in the 19th century. The complex consists of a dwelling about thirty meters long with a ground floor and an upper floor, whose main facade, adorned with a triangular pediment, is located to the west. To the north-west and south-west, two prominent square pavilions were built. Another dwelling, twice as wide, was added to the north-east, perpendicular to the first. A third building, perpendicular to the previous one, completes the construction to the east, the whole presenting an L-shaped structure. The main building is surrounded by outbuildings to the south-west, a main courtyard preceded by a gate to the west, French gardens to the north-west and a neo-Gothic chapel to the north-east. Covering 18 hectares, the park has been a classified site since December 16, 1969. To the north, from the park, the view extends over the Dordogne valley and two of its emblematic castles, rivals during the Hundred Years' War: Castelnaud, the English one, on the left bank two kilometers away, and Beynac, the French one, on the opposite bank, almost five kilometers away. The park also features an 18th-century fountain and washhouse and an imposing menhir, 3.80 meters high. On December 22, 1970, the Château de Lacoste was listed as a historical monument for its facades and roofs. In 2011, scenes from the television series Rani were filmed on the estate.
