Corbelin Castle is a castle located in the commune of La Chapelle-Saint-André in the Nièvre department (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region), on the banks of the Corbelin river.

History+

Under the episcopate of Guy de Mello, Count-Bishop of Auxerre, Geoffroy de Corbelin broke the rule towards his suzerain the bishop and built a bretèche (fortified wooden house) and other outbuildings without the latter's agreement. Mello was preparing to prosecute him for this fact, but the Countess of Auxerre Mahaut (1188-1257) intervened as a mediator and an agreement was reached in her presence during a meeting in Coulanges-sur-Yonne on May 31, 1249: Geoffroy could keep what he had built but could not build other buildings or enlarge existing ones. This site, whose first official mentions date back to the 12th century, has local historical and economic importance, due to the role it played as a pivotal seigneury between the County of Nevers and the Barony of Donzy, due to its iron production until the mid-19th century, and due to its driving role in timber floating activity. It currently consists of four massive towers dating from the late 14th century, a two-story main building from the 16th century located between the southeast and southwest towers, a utilitarian building from the 18th century, attached to the main building, and a common building from the 19th century. The ruins of a 19th-century blast furnace can also be admired there.
