Château de Châlus Maulmont

Châlus Maulmont Castle was built between 1275 and 1280 under the direction of Géraud de Maulmont, an advisor to the Viscountess of Limoges, Marguerite de Bourgogne. Originally, the lands belonged to Chalucet Castle. During the French Revolution, specifically between 1794 and 1799, the northwest tower and the main building suffered considerable damage as the local population used the castle as a quarry. The remaining part served as a prison until 1820 before being returned to the Count of Bourbon Busset. Following an investigation in 1888 by Jules Tixier, which highlighted the acute risk of collapse, the roof structure of the main house collapsed in 1928. A catastrophic collapse of the southeast tower occurred on March 20, 1994, fortunately without anyone being injured. Since 2005, the castle has been undergoing restoration with financial support and has been protected as a Monument historique since 1981.

The castle ruin is situated on a hill in Châlus, a commune in the Haute-Vienne department in the Limousin region, France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 371 meters above sea level.

Today, the ruins of Château de Châlus Maulmont can be visited. There are plans to integrate the castle into a culinary district.
