Château de Brandenbourg is an impressive castle ruin in northeastern Luxembourg, perched high above the village of the same name. Its history stretches far back, illustrating a development from a wooden fortress to a stately stone castle.
History+
Archaeological discoveries confirm that a wooden fortification existed at this strategically important site as early as the 9th and 10th centuries. The first stone structures were built in the 13th century, marking the beginning of the actual castle. In the 14th century, the complex was significantly enhanced with the construction of a chapel. The castle reached its largest extent through expansions in the 15th and 16th centuries. Château de Brandenbourg remained inhabited until the mid-18th century, before it was abandoned, like many other medieval fortresses, and fell into disrepair.
