Château de Bock
The Château de Bock, a historic castle complex, stands majestically on the distinctive Bock Promontory in the city of Luxembourg. Its significance lies in its role as the birthplace of the present-day city and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, whose origins can be traced back to the 10th century.
History+
The history of the site began in 963 when Count Siegfried of the Ardennes acquired the Bock Promontory through an exchange with St. Maximin's Abbey in Trier. A document from that period mentions a fortified structure, a “Castellum,” as well as an earthen rampart and a palisade. For a long time, it was assumed that Siegfried had taken over an already existing, fully developed defensive complex. However, archaeological excavations in the early 1990s revealed that a Roman military installation had already existed on the Bock Promontory by the end of the 3rd century, which was expanded between the 4th and 6th centuries and housed a garrison. The name “Lucilinburhuc” is now interpreted more as “fortified rock outcrop” rather than “small castle,” as previously believed. The designation “burgus Lucelenburgensis” or “opidum et castrum Luxelenburgensis” first appeared in 1225.
