Château d'Esch, an impressive castle ruin, is perched on a prominent rocky outcrop in the picturesque village of Esch-sur-Sûre in northwestern Luxembourg. Its history dates back a long way, making it a fascinating testament to medieval architecture.
History+
The origins of the castle date back to 927, when Hiletrude Meginaud or Maingaud and his wife acquired the area of Esch-sur-Sûre and began construction of the fortress. In the 13th century, the castle was owned by the Count of Esch. A decisive event was the destruction of the complex in 1685 by the troops of Louis XIV. It was not until 1902 that Martin Riano d'Hutzt acquired the ruin from the state for 1,000 francs and commissioned the architect Charles Arendt to carry out initial restoration work.
