Château d'Assier

The history of the estate begins in the early 15th century when it was owned by the de Bosc family. Through the marriage of Catherine de Bosc to Jean de Genouillac in 1469, Assier came into the possession of the Genouillac family. Catherine's son Jacques, known as Galiot de Genouillac, had an impressive career at the French royal court, holding high offices under Charles VIII, Louis XII, and Francis I, including Grand Master of Artillery and Grand Equerry of France. Given his wealth and status, he decided around 1523 to replace his mother's old castle with a representative château. According to plans by architect Nicolas Bachelier, the current Château d'Assier was built by 1535. After Galiot's death in 1546 and the early death of his son François, the château passed to the de Crussol family through the marriage of his daughter Jeanne. As the new owners had no use for the property, it fell into disrepair. In 1768, three of the four dilapidated wings were sold for demolition. Only the west wing, which was used for agricultural purposes, remained and was later sold to Jean-Gabriel Murat de Montaï. Initial preservation measures began in 1901, and since 1934, the château has been owned by the French state, which had it restored and opened to the public.

The Château d'Assier is located in the commune of Assier in the Lot department, in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 341 meters above sea level.

Today, the château is accessible to visitors and can be toured. The only preserved wing houses a small museum that offers insights into the history and architecture of the building. Occasionally, art exhibitions or music events take place in the château courtyard.
