Château d'Ardelay

The origins of Château d'Ardelay date back to the 10th century, when a wooden castle was built on a motte, protected by a palisade and a moat. It was later replaced by a stone structure that included a second enceinte, enclosing the castle, outbuildings, church, and cemetery. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times through marriage and inheritance, including the de Pareds, de Chantemerle, and de Vivonne families. In the 17th century, the castellany passed to the de Couhé family, before being sold in 1687 to Henri François des Herbiers de L'Estenduère. After the death of the last representative of the d'Escoubleau family in 1854, a Trappist nun, the property fell into disrepair. It was listed as a historical monument in 1927. The municipality of Les Herbiers acquired the ruined castle in 1984 and carried out extensive restoration work from 1985 to 1988 to preserve the structure and make it usable as an exhibition space.

Château d'Ardelay is located in the municipality of Les Herbiers in the Vendée department, in the Pays de la Loire region of France, at an altitude of approximately 105 meters above sea level.

Today, Château d'Ardelay is accessible to visitors and serves as an exhibition space. It features a 15th-century square keep, moats, a restored drawbridge, and a firing chamber. The small inner courtyard is enclosed by a Renaissance residential building and 18th-century outbuildings. Since 2010, the exterior of the castle has been illuminated in the evenings by energy-efficient LED lighting.
