Château Cantemerle

Vineyard

Château Cantemerle is a renowned winery in the Bordeaux region, known for its long history and its classification as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé. It is nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Haut-Médoc and stands as a significant testament to French wine culture.

History+

The first documented mention of the property dates back to 1147, when Arnaud de Blanquefort bequeathed land to a monastery before his departure for the Wendish Crusade. A century later, a Seigneur de Cantemerle fought alongside Henry III in the Battle of Taillebourg. The Cantemerle family remained connected to the estate, and a document from 1354 first confirms viticulture through the payment of tithes in the form of a barrel of Clairet. In 1422, ownership passed to the Caupène family. Later, in 1579, Jean de Villeneuve, the second president of the Parliament of Bordeaux, acquired the estate. The Villeneuve-Durfort family owned the Château until the late 19th century. During this period, viticulture became the dominant activity. A special feature was the subsequent inclusion of the winery in the 1855 classification, thanks to the efforts of Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort. In 1892, due to the phylloxera plague and downy mildew, the estate was sold to the Dubos family, who guided it through times of crisis. In 1981, SMABTP took over the winery, extensively renovated it, and expanded the vineyards, leading to its renewed prosperity.
