Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Marseille

At the site of the current cathedral, a bishop's church with a baptistery already existed in the 4th or 5th century, whose foundations were discovered during the construction of the present edifice. This earlier church, originally dedicated to Saint Lazarus, was rebuilt after several Saracen invasions, most recently in 923. In the 11th century, around 1073, Bishop Pons II began a complete reconstruction of a Romanesque basilica. Parts of this Romanesque church were later demolished for city fortifications and the portal was relocated. During the French Revolution, the Diocese of Marseille was abolished, the cathedral downgraded and temporarily closed; it suffered severe damage during this period. After a makeshift restoration, it became a bishop's church again in 1823. The construction of the current building began in 1852 with the laying of the foundation stone by Napoleon III, initiated by Bishop Eugen von Mazenod. For the new construction, further parts of the Romanesque church had to make way. The erection of the new cathedral took four decades and was completed in 1896 with the title of a Basilica minor.

The cathedral is located in Marseille, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 24 meters above sea level.
