Cathédrale Saint-Théodorit d'Uzès

The origins of the cathedral date back to 1090, when the first Christian church in Romanesque style was built on this site, which once housed a Gallo-Roman temple. This building, presumably influenced by Cluniac architecture, suffered partial damage in 1177 during the Albigensian Crusades but was restored. A much more extensive destruction occurred on May 13, 1563, at the beginning of the French Wars of Religion, when the cathedral was completely destroyed except for the lower floors of the bell tower. Only by royal decree in 1637 was its reconstruction decided. Construction work dragged on from 1642 to 1663 and cost many times the originally estimated budget. The building served as an episcopal see until 1792. The bell tower, the Tour Fenestrelle, was recognized as a Monument historique as early as 1862, with the church building itself following in 1963.

The Cathédrale Saint-Théodorit d'Uzès is located in the town of Uzès in the Gard department, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 135 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the church today. The distinctive Tour Fenestrelle, France's only cylindrical bell tower, is a landmark of the town. Inside, the three-aisled gallery basilica presents a classical austerity, softened by a ribbed vault. A special feature is the main organ, built from 1660 onwards, which is considered one of the most beautiful in France.
