Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Vannes

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Vannes is a significant sacred building in the Breton city of Vannes. As a Roman Catholic cathedral and minor basilica, it embodies a rich architectural history spanning centuries and stands as a prominent example of regional architectural development.
History+
The cathedral's origins trace back to 1020, when a Romanesque granite structure was erected. This building was expanded over time with various additions. The Romanesque bell tower, dating from the 13th century, was later integrated into the Gothic reconstruction. The extensive Gothic rebuilding commenced in the 15th century, between 1450 and 1520, as the existing church had become too small for the throngs of pilgrims wishing to visit the tomb of Saint Vincent Ferrer, who died in Vannes in 1419 and was buried there. From this period date the nave and transept, as well as a portal structure on the north side with twelve niches for apostle statues. In the 16th century, the Chapelle du Saint-Sacrement, a multi-story Renaissance chapel, was added to the north facade of the transept. The vaults and choir were constructed between 1771 and 1774, while the south tower and west facade were only completed in the mid-19th century.
