Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Beauvais

The cathedral's origins trace back to the 13th century when Bishop Milon de Nanteuil initiated its construction, replacing an older Carolingian predecessor. The ambition was to erect the tallest church in Christendom. Following initial funding difficulties, the choir's construction began, completed in 1275. However, in 1284, part of the vault collapsed due to the overly daring design. Reconstruction spanned decades, with intermediate pillars added for stabilization. The Hundred Years' War halted work from 1347. Construction resumed only in 1500, leading to the transept with an even higher vault. A crossing tower, completed in 1569, reached 153 meters, briefly making it the tallest structure of its time, but it collapsed in 1573 due to structural issues. This catastrophe and the subsequent Huguenot Wars led to the cessation of construction, leaving the nave unfinished.

The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Beauvais is situated in the city of Beauvais, in the Oise department of the Picardy region, France, at an elevation of approximately 92 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the impressive cathedral today. Inside, due to ongoing structural issues, several wooden and steel supports are visible, as extensive repair work is underway. A medieval clock and a magnificent astronomical clock from 1866 are also on display.
