Castle Williams

The fortress was designed and constructed between 1807 and 1811 under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Williams, commander of the Corps of Engineers and first director of the Military Academy at West Point. It was an essential component of New York's inner harbor defense system. On November 24, 1810, the structure was named Castle Williams in honor of its builder. During the American Civil War, the fortress served as a prison camp for Confederate soldiers and Union army deserters, as well as a barracks. After 1865, it was converted into a military prison for minor offenses and simultaneously continued to be used as a barracks. From 1895, Castle Williams was designated as one of the ten military prisons of the US Army and underwent extensive modernization, including the installation of central heating and sanitary facilities. In the early 20th century, Secretary of State Elihu Root personally advocated for the preservation of the fort. In 1903, it was converted into a model prison, and in 1904, it received an electricity connection. Between 1912 and 1913, the gorge wall was renewed, and in 1915, it became an outpost of the United States Disciplinary Barracks. Extensive renovations between 1947 and 1948 gave the building its current appearance, with wood replaced by reinforced concrete and masonry elements. After the military abandonment of Governors Island in 1966, Castle Williams was deactivated and used by the US Coast Guard as a club and community center before being abandoned in 1997. Since 2003, it has been managed by the National Park Service as part of the Governors Island National Monument.
