Castle Saunderson
The ruins of Castle Saunderson, once a significant family seat, are picturesquely situated in the Irish landscape near Belturbet. Although now only a ruin, the structure bears witness to a long and eventful history, deeply rooted in the regional past.
History+
The origins of Castle Saunderson date back to the 14th century, when it was known as Breffni Castle and inhabited by the O'Reillys of Breffni. In 1573, the castle came into the possession of the Saunderson family, who made it their ancestral home. However, the current structure dates from 1840. After centuries of family ownership, Captain Alexander Saunderson sold the estate in 1977 to a businessman who intended to use it as a residence. It later served as a hotel but was significantly damaged by fire.
