Castillo de San Joaquín

The Fortress can be visited

The Castillo de San Joaquín is a remarkable inland fortress on Tenerife, which once played a crucial role in the defensive strategy of the Canary Islands. With its distinctive architecture and strategic positioning, it offered protection against potential invasions and stands today as a testament to military engineering.

History+

The origins of the Castillo de San Joaquín date back to 1586, when Governor D. Juan Núñez de la Fuente ordered the construction of defensive structures at this location. These initial designs were by the Italian architect Leonardo Torriani but were later abandoned. The construction of the current fortress began in 1780. Its main function was to secure the island's interior should coastal defenses ever be breached. Throughout its history, the Castillo served various purposes, including as a military prison, an ammunition depot, and even a dovecote for the Spanish Military Homing Pigeon Corps. Although the exterior remained largely unchanged, the interior was repeatedly adapted to its respective uses. In 1996, the fortress was sold to a private individual. It was listed as a monument on April 22, 1949, and officially declared a Cultural Asset on February 15, 2000.
