The Castello di Udine is a prominent castle in northern Italy, perched on a hill in the city of Udine. Today, it houses an important museum and stands as a testament to the rich history of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.
History+
The origins of the Castello di Udine date back a long way. A first mention of a castle on this site appears as early as 983, when Emperor Otto II granted a "Castrum" to Patriarch Rodoaldo of Aquileia. A devastating earthquake in 1511 completely destroyed the existing structure. Reconstruction began in 1517 and spanned nearly five decades. The artistic design of the exterior facade and the murals in the Parliament Hall were executed by Giovanni da Udine, a well-known pupil of Raphael.
