Castello di Muggia

The origins of the Castello di Muggia possibly date back to prehistoric times, when a fortified settlement existed on the hill, later converted into a watchtower by the Romans. In the Middle Ages, the complex was expanded and redesigned multiple times, with the original core built from sandstone blocks. In the second half of the 14th century, the castle became part of an extensive defense system commissioned by the Patriarch of Aquileia, which also included the city walls of the medieval town below. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the fortress was gradually dismantled, and much of the material was used in the construction of houses in Muggia. At the beginning of the 20th century, a new tower was built in the castle, and parts were converted for residential use. Since 1991, the castle has been owned by the sculptor Villiano Bossi, who, with his wife, restored it and made it accessible for cultural events.

The Castello di Muggia is located in the municipality of Muggia, in the district of Trieste, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, Italy. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 17 meters above sea level.

Today, the Castello di Muggia is privately owned. It has been restored and serves as a venue for cultural events, which bring it to life.
