Castello di Montorio

The origins of Castello di Montorio date back to the 10th century, built upon earlier Roman structures, and were completed in the early 12th century. During the 14th century, under Scaliger rule, the complex was expanded and strengthened with the construction of a bastion. In the 19th century, much of the medieval structures were demolished or damaged to integrate the new battery. However, it is worth noting that the castle had already been increasingly neglected during the Venetian era and was largely in ruins by the 18th century.

The ruin of Castello di Montorio is situated in Montorio, a district of Verona in the Veneto region, Italy. It lies at an elevation of approximately 137 meters above sea level, dominating the surrounding, now largely urbanized plain.

Visitors can today explore the extensive grounds of the castle ruin. Despite damage from the battery's earthworks, various fronts are still discernible. The larger courtyard is publicly accessible, and following the completion of renovation and restoration work, which included the powder magazine and medieval walls and towers, the fortress can be visited year-round, including guided tours and special events.
