Castello di Monselice

The origins of the Castello di Monselice date back to the 11th century. The oldest part, the Castelletto with its Romanesque house, was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. In the 13th century, the massive Ezzelino Tower was erected, while a fortress was built on the hilltop by Ezzelino III da Romano on behalf of Emperor Frederick II. In the 15th century, the Palazzo Marcello was added to the complex as a connecting element. The castle library was housed in an existing building at the end of the 16th century. After its conquest by the Republic of Venice in the 15th century, the castle passed to the Marcello family, who transformed it into a civil residence. In the 19th century, the estate fell into disrepair until Count Vittorio Cini initiated extensive restoration in the 1930s to return it to its original state.
