Castello di Miramare

The castle was built between 1856 and 1860 by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria, brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I, and his wife Charlotte of Belgium. The Viennese architect Carl Junker was responsible for the design, with Maximilian's ideas, especially his love for the sea, significantly influencing the layout. The interior furnishings were only fully completed in 1870, after Maximilian's death. In 1863, Maximilian was appointed Emperor of Mexico by a Mexican delegation here. After his execution in 1867 and the return of the ailing Charlotte to Belgium, Miramare served as a summer residence for the Habsburgs, where Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth, among others, stayed. After World War I, the furniture was initially moved to Vienna but was fully returned between 1924 and 1925. From 1932 to 1937, Amadeus of Savoy and his family occupied parts of the castle. After being occupied by German troops in World War II and used as an Allied military headquarters until 1954, the castle opened its doors as a state museum in 1955.
