Castello di Lazise

The Castello di Lazise is an impressive medieval castle complex picturesquely situated on the shores of Lake Garda in the Italian region of Veneto. Originally built to defend the lakeside, the fortress bears witness to a turbulent history and is today a fascinating testament to the Scaliger era.
History+
The origins of Lazise Castle date back to the 9th century, when residents erected initial defenses against Hungarian invasions. These fortifications were completed by the end of the 10th century, confirmed by an imperial privilege from Otto II in 983. In 1193, the castle came under the rule of the free commune of Verona and later under the Scaligers. Alberto II and Mastino II della Scala restored the city walls in 1329, adding about twenty towers. The reconstruction of the actual fortress began in 1375 under Cansignorio and was completed in 1381 by Antonio and Bartolomeo II, making Lazise an important stronghold in the western Veronese defense system. Throughout its history, the castle endured several sieges, including in 1387 by the armies of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Francesco I Gonzaga, and Francesco I da Carrara, in 1439 by the forces of the Serenissima, and most recently in 1528 by the Duke of Brunswick.
