History+
The origins of the Castello di Gorizia can be traced back to the 11th century. Over the centuries, the fortress underwent numerous alterations and expansions, particularly between the 13th and 16th centuries, as buildings and defensive structures were successively added. The castle was held by various powers, including the Counts of Gorizia, the Habsburgs, Venice, and briefly Napoleon. The Venetians had an old watchtower demolished, whose foundations are still visible today in the Lanzi courtyard. Over time, the fortress served as an administrative center, barracks, and prison. During the First World War, the Castello was bombed, but patiently reconstructed from the 1930s by the Cossar family, which helped it regain its fascinating medieval character. Access today is through the Porta Leopoldina, built in 1660 in honor of a visit by Emperor Leopold of Habsburg.
