History+
The origins of the Castello di Civitella date back to the Lombard period, with an initial mention around the year 1048. After the year 1000, the surrounding area was granted as a fief to the Bishop of Arezzo. In 1289, following the Guelph victory in the Battle of Campaldino near Poppi, control of the site passed to the Signoria of Florence. This takeover was repeated in 1338 when Arezzo lost its independence to Florence. During the conflicts between Siena and Florence, the castle was besieged by Piero Strozzi in 1554 but was not captured.
