Castello di Castellano

The castle's origins date back to the 12th century, when bailiffs of the Bishop of Trento resided here. From 1261 to 1456, Castellano was owned by the Lords of Castelbarco. In 1456, the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Georg Hack von Themeswald, commissioned the brothers Georg and Peter Lodron to seize the castles of the disobedient Johann von Castelbarco. They succeeded, and Castellano became a fief of the Counts Lodron. Hostilities between the families only ended in 1479, and they were later connected by marriage. The Lodrons transformed the castle into a stately residence, adorned it with frescoes, and inhabited it until the 18th century. Subsequently, the already dilapidated complex was left to the Morandi family.

The Castello di Castellano is located at approximately 771 m above sea level in Villa Lagarina-Castellano, in the province of Trento, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, Italy.

Today, the Castello di Castellano is privately owned and can be visited by prior telephone arrangement with the owner. Despite an earthquake in 1878, a partial collapse in 1918, and a fire in 1932, medieval elements such as the crenellated curtain wall are still preserved. The keep, possibly dating from the 8th century, and a tower-like structure on the east side, considered the torso of the former palazzo, are still visible today.
