Castello di Asolo

The first documented mention of the Castrum of Asolo dates back to 969 in a charter by Emperor Otto I, although the designation of the fortress suggests Roman origins. Over the centuries, the castle, strategically located at the entrances to the Piave and Brenta valleys, experienced turbulent times with destruction and reconstruction, particularly during barbarian rule. In the 13th century, it served as the residence of Ezzelino III da Romano and later passed to the Carraresi and the municipality of Treviso. The complex flourished under Venetian rule (1393-1797), when it was expanded into an important stronghold. From 1489, the Castello became the residence of Caterina Cornaro, the former Queen of Cyprus, who maintained a splendid court here and commissioned numerous Renaissance-style restorations. After her death, the building lost its prestige and was used as a Venetian praetorium, lazaretto, warehouse, and even a prison. From 1932, it served as a municipal theater.

The Castello di Asolo is located in Asolo, a town in the province of Treviso in the Veneto region, Italy. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 225 meters above sea level.

The castle complex is currently privately owned. Visitors can see parts of the surrounding wall, the outer walls of the current theater, the clock tower, and the truncated tower called Reata. The castle houses a theater dedicated to Eleonora Duse, as well as a restaurant/bar. The large green area is used for events. A wall walk connects the castle with the nearby fortress.
