Carrickfergus Castle is an imposing Norman fortress, standing prominently in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. Its long history and strategic importance make it an outstanding testament to medieval architecture and military development in the region.
History+
The origins of the fortress date back to 1177, when John de Courcy initiated its construction and used it as his residence, ruling as king from there until 1204. His reign ended with his overthrow by Hugh de Lacy. In 1210, King John besieged the castle. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the complex underwent extensive transformation into a fortress. It played an important role in the Battle of Carrickfergus in 1597. Later, in 1690, it was besieged and captured by General Schomberg. In 1760, the fortress briefly fell to French troops under Francois Thurot. Remarkably, Carrickfergus Castle was continuously occupied for military purposes until 1928, spanning a period of approximately 750 years.
