Carola Castle

In 1873, the then 22-year-old Friedrich Bouché took over the position of director of the Großer Garten. He worked for almost 50 years for the benefit of the park. In 1875, Bouché acquired the Strehlen fields and incorporated them into the further design of the Großer Garten. In the winter of 1881/82, a former gravel pit located in this area was transformed into a lake.

This lake was named "Carolasee" in honor of Queen Carola. In 1886, the lake was enlarged in the direction of Querallee. This created a peninsula on which a small tavern called "Krähenhütte" stood until 1895. After its demolition, it was replaced in the same year by a large guesthouse with a beer garden. It received the resonant name "Carolaschlösschen" and was built in the Neo-Renaissance style.

During the last air raids on Dresden in 1945, the "Carolaschlösschen" was completely destroyed, along with many cultural assets.

After complete renovation, the Carolaschlösschen reopened its doors in 1999 in new splendor, with the awareness that tradition and hospitality would find a new home in this Grand Café.

In the winter months of 2003/2004, as part of the second construction phase, the new "Galerie" restaurant opened on the first floor. There you will be spoiled with Mediterranean delicacies.
