Carbisdale Castle

The history of Carbisdale Castle begins with an unwelcome marriage: Mary Caroline Mitchell, widow of Captain Arthur Kindersely Blair, married George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, the 3rd Duke of Sutherland, in 1889. Following the Duke's death in 1892, an inheritance dispute erupted. The widow, named as the sole heir, was imprisoned for destroying documents. Eventually, the parties reached an agreement: the Sutherland family committed to financing the construction of a castle for the widow, on the condition that it be built outside Sutherland. The Duchess then chose a site in Ross-shire, the Carbisdale Heights, from where the castle would be widely visible, especially from the Sutherland family's travel routes. Construction began in 1906 and was completed in 1917. After the Duchess remarried in 1933, Colonel Theodore Salvesen acquired the estate. During World War II, he made it available to the exiled Norwegian royal family. The Carbisdale Conference took place here in 1941, where the Soviet withdrawal from Norwegian territory after the war was agreed upon. After Salvesen's death, his son Harold donated the castle to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association, which opened it as a youth hostel on June 2, 1945.
