Cahir Castle

The origins of Cahir Castle date back to the third century. The first fortification was carried out in 1142 by Donough O'Brien, Prince of Thomond. In 1375, the castle was granted to the Butler family for their loyalty to King Edward III. In 1599, the castle was the scene of a three-day siege, during which it was captured by Robert Devereux. Just one year later, James Butler, with the support of a rebel army, managed to reclaim the family seat. In 1650, the castle fell to Oliver Cromwell during his reconquest of Ireland. Around 1840, restoration work was carried out under William Tinsley. After the death of the last Lord Cahir in 1961, the castle became state property.

Cahir Castle is located in the town of Cahir in County Tipperary, which belongs to the province of Munster in Ireland. It stands at an elevation of approximately 38 meters above sea level.

Today, Cahir Castle is accessible to visitors and can be toured for an entrance fee. Inside the castle, audiovisual presentations in various languages are offered, as well as a model of the Siege of Cahir Castle featuring nearly 1000 figures. A prominent tower, known as the "Wardrobe Tower," was once used to hang clothes above the sanitary facilities to kill parasites with ammonia fumes. The castle also served as a filming location for movies such as "Excalibur" and the youth series "Mystic Knights – The Legend of Tir Na Nog."
