Wippra Castle
Wippra Castle, also known as Altenburg, Schloss, Kanzel, Altes Schloss, is the remains of a hilltop castle on a rock in the Wippertal valley near the Wippra district of the city of Sangerhausen in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt.
The castle was probably built by the Counts of Wippra at the beginning of the 11th century, thus establishing the manorial lordship of Wippra. (According to the State Museum Halle, the village is older than the castle and its founding period is estimated to be between 830 and 850.) The Counts of Wippra resided at the castle until 1175, when it passed to the Lords of Hackedorn, who sold the castle to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg in 1328. From 1440, the castle was owned by the Counts of Mansfeld; later, the Lords of Hoym are also mentioned as owners. After 1579, the castle began to fall into disrepair.

The former castle complex featured a 65 by 125 meter main castle with a gate zwinger at the southern end, a keep with a base area of 15 by 15 meters, an outer bailey of approximately 50 by 120 meters, and a northern neck ditch. Remains of a rampart, ditch, and walls are still preserved from the complex.
