Wimburg Castle

The first documented mention of Wimburg was in 1076. A monastery near Passau received, among other properties in this area, a "Hofschacham ad Wimberch". Within the castle was a church dedicated to Saint Peter, which also held significance as a pilgrimage church.
In 1296, Queen Agnes of Hungary received the County of Weitenegg as a widow's estate. In 1450, the Wimberg estate was united with the Altenmarkt estate. By 1572, the castle was already vacant and left to decay. In 1840, Empress Karolina Augusta enabled the construction of the church tower, using stones from the Wimburg ruin as building material.
The current owners of the ruin are the Habsburg-Lorraine Estate of Persenbeug. Only sparse remains are still present, such as neck ditches, a chapel with a cross vault, and remnants of windows and light slits.
