Wessenstein Castle

Wessenstein Castle was built in the 13th century. It first appears in a document in 1245, when a vassal of the Wildoners, Wulfing, named himself after "Wefssensteine". The discovery of a 13th-century gold coin also testifies to the castle's great age. Later, documents from 1352 and 1422 reported on the "purchstal Wephenstain". At that time, the fortified castle, which was intended to protect the path from Stainz via the Aibl to the Pack from attacks, belonged to the possessions of Stainz Abbey.

For the period after the extinction of the Wessenstein family, which is assumed to have occurred around the turn of the 13th to the 14th century, the abandonment and desertion of Wessenstein Castle is also assumed.
