The first entry about a castle on the Weinsberg can be found in a register of the Kremsmünster Abbey from the year 1299. The possessions of the monastery in "Weigansberg" are with high probability the Weinsberg. Only from the year 1388 is there a mention of the "Weinperkh" castle, which was then in the possession of Konrad von Maissau and his sons Ulrich and Otto von Pöggstall.
Already in the years 1412 and 1414, only a castle ruin is mentioned. The ruin remained associated with the Pöggstall dominion until 1850; today it belongs to the Habsburg-Lothringen estate of Persenbeug. Since 2011, the ruin has been undergoing renovation. Project sponsors are the Bärnkopf Tourism Association and the Weinsbergerwald Historical Association.
