Weikertschlag Castle
Weikertschlag Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle in Weikertschlag an der Thaya in Lower Austria.
The exact time of the construction of Weikertschlag Castle on the so-called Pankratius Hill is not known. However, the castle is indirectly mentioned through its owners Albero and Wichart in a document concerning the tithe, which belonged to the monasteries of Geras and Pernegg, in 1178.
After 1232, the village and the castle came into the possession of the Babenbergs. After their extinction, King Ottokar II Přemysl demanded the castle back from Rudolf of Habsburg as his property, but was unsuccessful with this demand.
In 1404, Hynek (Suchý Čert) von Kunstadt (Heinrich the Dry Devil of Kunstadt on Jaispitz † 1407) as well as Ulrich von Neuhaus and Albert von Vöttau occupied the castle. In response, Dukes Wilhelm and Albrecht besieged the castle and destroyed it. However, the timing of these events does not seem to be clear, as the year 1399 is also mentioned as the time of the successful siege.
Since the castle was not rebuilt, it was gradually dismantled over time as building material for other buildings, so that very little of the original castle structure remains today. What is still preserved and visible today is the remains of a keep-like tower in the area of the outer bailey.
Pankratius Chapel+
Between the castle and this tower was the so-called Pankratius Chapel. In the course of the Josephine reforms, it was closed and demolished in 1784. Its bell, cast in Krems an der Donau in 1723, is said to have been rediscovered years later in the Moravian Thaya. For some time it was kept in the rectory of Weikertschlag and then used in the neighboring Oberndorf. In the First World War, it had to be handed over.
