Wartstein Castle
The Wartstein ruin is a castle ruin on a rocky slope, 150 meters above the valley of the Große Lauter southwest of the Erbstetten district of the city of Ehingen in the Alb-Donau-Kreis in Baden-Württemberg.
In the 12th century, the rock castle was built by the Lords of Wartenstein; in 1185, a "comes de Wartstein" is mentioned in a document. On March 5, 1392, Heinrich von Wartstein sold the castle with all its possessions to the Dukes Stephan, Friedrich, and Johann of Bavaria, and in 1394 the castle was expanded. In July 1495, the castles of Wartstein and Monsberg were destroyed. On February 18, 1508, the ruin became the property of Hans Speth von Granheim, and in 1848, the property of the municipality of Erbstetten. In 1924, restoration work took place, followed by further restoration work and the addition of a spiral staircase from 1968–1970.

The castle complex, with a neck ditch, which had no core castle, is a shield wall castle in a spur location with a significant remnant of a 12-meter-high tower-like shield wall serving as a keep, under whose protection was the double-gabled palas with a floor area of 7.0 by 10.7 meters, on whose front side remnants of the surrounding walls are still visible.
Today, the tower serves as an observation tower on main hiking trail 2 of the Swabian Albverein.
