Walkenstein Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Walkenstein ruin, also called Falkenstein or Valkenstein, is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 340 m above sea level on the western spur of the "Webersköpfle" near the Walke district of the municipality of Oberwolfach in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg.

The castle was probably built by the Counts of Fürstenberg in the 14th century as a defensive and residential tower to secure mining rights and ore transports. In 1364, an "Aigelwart von Walkenstein" is mentioned as the owner of the tower castle. From 1988 to 1990, the remains of the tower castle were archived and secured. Remains of the square foundation walls of the tower, measuring 7.80 by 8.75 meters, are still preserved from the former castle complex.
