Valečov Castle

The castle ruin of Valečov, also known by its German name Walletschow, is a striking testament to medieval architecture in the heart of the Bohemian Paradise. This former rock castle, whose origins were partly carved directly into the sandstone, is located near the village of Boseň and attracts visitors with its history-rich aura.
History+
The first written mention of Valečov dates back to the years 1316 to 1318. Initially, wood dominated as a building material, but over time, numerous rooms were integrated directly into the natural sandstone cliffs. In the mid-15th century, under Vaněk of Valečov, a royal official of George of Poděbrady, the complex underwent significant expansion into a robust defensive structure. Its strength was proven in 1468 when it withstood an attack by the Lusatian army unscathed. After several changes of ownership, the dominion was confiscated in 1623 and briefly came into Wallenstein's possession, who, however, sold it on in 1625. Although the Waldstein family reacquired the castle in 1652, Valečov was already in significant disrepair after the Thirty Years' War. It subsequently served as a settlement for the poor and as a quarry for the surrounding villages. The last inhabitants left the rock dwellings in 1892.
