Twimberg Castle
The castle ruin Twimberg is the ruin of a hilltop castle above the village of Twimberg in the municipality of Bad St. Leonhard. The former coercive castle was built in a commanding position at the mouth of the Waldensteiner Graben valley into the narrow Lavanttal valley at this point.
Around 931, the castle and the surrounding area were donated to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. Between 1326 and 1329, the feudal lord Hadneid von Weissenegg sold the castle to Bishop Dietrich von Lavant. Hadneid von Weissenegg built the slightly higher-lying fortress Pirkenstein, a now barely ascertainable outwork of Twimberg. Under Bishop Dietrich von Lavant, the keep and a new ring wall were built. During the time of Bishop Roth von Lavant (1468-1482), the outer bailey with a new gate system, the zwinger, as well as the east wing and the kitchen were built. From 1481 to 1490, Hungarian troops occupied the castle. In 1569, the decaying complex was renovated again. From the middle of the 17th century, the castle fell into disrepair.
Architectural Description+
The castle is a large, approximately square complex from the 14th to 16th centuries. The main castle in the southeast and the extensive outer bailey are surrounded by a ring wall. The core of the high castle dates from the first half of the 12th century. Parts of the east wing from the 14th/15th centuries are preserved. In the northeast stand the remains of the mighty keep, probably built in the 13th century. The southern outwork dates from the 14th century. 300 meters northeast stands a tower built around 1320 and secured by neck ditches, with a side length of twelve meters, a wall thickness of two meters, and a height of 14 meters.
