Thurnberg Castle

The builder of the castle is not known. It may have been Anselm von Kuenring, who owned Krumau around the turn of the 11th to the 12th century. With Sibito de Durrenberc, the Lords of Thurnberg were first mentioned in a document in 1209. The castle itself was first mentioned in 1281 as "Thvernberch". In 1346, the knight Konrad Fritzelsdorfer resided here. His widow Margareta was married in a second marriage to Ulrich von Streun, who called himself "von Turnwerch" in 1356. However, his descendants no longer lived here and had the modest defensive structure administered by burgraves. Jörg der Öder is mentioned as such in 1372.

Shortly before 1440, Thurnberg became a robber baron's nest. Jakob Kienberger, together with Moravian and Hungarian mercenaries, devastated the surroundings from Thurnberg. In 1448, Ulrich von Eytzing then set up an intervention force of the Lower Austrian estates, which conquered and destroyed Thurnberg. Jakob Kienberger had to submit. Thurnberg was never rebuilt. In 1565, the ruin was already referred to as an "öder Burgstall" (desolate castle site). It remained attached to the Idolsberg dominion for a long time. Today, the ruin, of which only a few wall remnants of the tower remain, belongs to the Austrian Federal Forests.
