Strečno Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Strečno Castle Ruin stands impressively on a rock above the Váh River in Central Slovakia. As a hilltop castle, it once secured the strategically important Domašínsky meander pass together with a neighboring fortress and is now an accessible testament to medieval architecture.

History+

The origins of Strečno Castle date back to around 1300, when it was first mentioned as the seat of a dominion under the oligarch Matthew Csák. Originally, it consisted of a fortified Gothic residential tower that protected a ford. In the 15th century, the castle was royal property, belonging to Queens Barbara and Elizabeth, before passing into the possession of the Pongrácz family. Thereafter, ownership changed frequently, including John Corvinus and John Zápolya. In the 17th century, the castle served as a refuge for the anti-Habsburg Thököly rebels, after which the imperial army under Leopold I razed the outer fortifications and damaged the castle. After this destruction, it remained a ruin. Conservation work was carried out at the beginning of the 20th century, and in 1970, Strečno was declared a national cultural monument. Extensive renovation work, completed in 1995, made the partially reconstructed castle accessible to visitors again.
