Stein Castle

A princely castle is first mentioned in 1336. It was integrated into the city fortifications of Stein. The princes rarely stayed here and left the administration of the castle to a salaried caretaker, who was also responsible for collecting the Danube toll.

In 1336, Albrecht der Scheuch von Friedling served as burgrave or caretaker. In 1447, the garrison successfully withstood a siege by troops of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, but in 1485, they had to open their gates to the Hungarians. The castle and city remained occupied until 1490. Around 1614, the complex was already dilapidated. The city had to take over its maintenance. In 1645, the Swedes stormed the technically outdated castle, damaging it in the process.

Subsequently, no one cared for the fortress, which had become dysfunctional, and it was left to decay. In 1799, the castle grounds were parceled out and sold to private individuals. The buildings that had not yet completely fallen into disrepair were converted into residential houses. Even today, most of the former castle area is privately owned and therefore not publicly accessible.
